Disney Infinity D23 Panel News Round-Up!

Disney Infinity brought many things to announce to their D23 Panel on Sunday at the D23 Expo.

First off John Blackburn confirmed that they have announced five play sets already, with more on the way.

Next they turned their attention to the Marvel franchises by officially naming the Marvel play set: Marvel Battlegrounds. The Marvel play set will release in Spring 2016, and will be compatible with any Marvel figure.

The magic band is also getting a special unlock in Disney Infinity 3.0. In this game, when you place the magic band on the base (that you obtain when you go to Walt Disney World), you will unlock the Mickey & Walt statue that is featured at many Disney Parks!

Disney Cruise Line goers will be able to get exclusive content, as previously announced. They will be able to unlock the Disney Cruise Line ship toy box piece as well as other toys, that they did not go into detail for.

Next Disney officially announced the Toy Box Artists Custom Pick, which is a figure that the Toy Box Artists get to choose for the next iteration of Disney Infinity. Their pick? Peter Pan! So Peter Pan is our first official figure for Disney Infinity ‘4.0’, or whatever it will be called. The figure will include special packaging to show off the special reason that it is a figure. (UPDATE: JV is now actually saying on twitter that they are planning to have Peter Pan release for 3.0, not 4.0!)

Finally Disney turned the presentation to the reason many people tuned in… the unveil of new 3.0 figures.

Three ‘Disney Originals’ figures were announced coming to Disney Infinity 3.0

  • Spot (from The Good Dinosaur)
  • Judy (from Zootopia)
  • Nick (from Zootopia)

In addition, The Good Dinosaur will be getting a Power Disc Pack for 3.0, but unfortunately didn’t go into much detail on those.

Disney also made a surprising announcement that there will be a ‘collector’s line’ of Star Wars figures (named the Light FX series) coming that will have their lightsabers light up when placed on the base. The figures will look the same, and play the same in the game, just will have a lightsaber that can light up. The line includes: Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Kana.

What about that ultimate unlock? Well Disney greatly excited the crowd by announcing that the Sora’s Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts will be playable for players who purchase all the figures for Disney Infinity 3.0.

But that wasn’t all the Kingdom Hearts news for Disney Infinity. All the Expoers who were able to see the Disney Interactive panel got a special treat. Not only does everyone get a Mickey Mouse figure, but also a King Mickey power disc that transforms Mickey into his Kingdom Hearts outfit. The power disc is an expo exclusive, and will never be sold in stores.

Finally, John Vignocchi and John Blackburn ended the panel by showing attendees the first glimpse at two of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens figures to come to Disney Infinity 3.0: Finn & Rey.

Both of those figures were given away to some kids in attendance by the actors themselves, which was a very cool move.

More picture and updates as they are officially posted.

MY TAKE:

First off, I’m SUPER excited about the Light FX Series.

The ultimate unlock is very cool, something the fans have been calling for, so glad to see they are getting it!

The three character announcements weren’t a huge shock to me. The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia played a HUGE part at D23 this weekend so it made sense to announce them here. Again, I say it all the time… Disney Infinity is a marketing arm for the Disney company. When they want to advertise something, they make it in Infinity. But don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about both of those characters. Saw a lot of footage this weekend at D23 Expo from both of those movies… and I think many of you will enjoy them!

Finally.. the exclusive. We knew it was coming, and they will always have an exclusive at this event. At it’s true core, Disney Infinity is a collector’s game. Skylanders has an exclusive, LEGO Dimensions I can guarantee you will have an exclusive at some point, and amiibo? Well let’s not go there. — But any kind of ‘collection’ has exclusives somewhere at some point. It build excitement around the game. While I understand why some of you will be upset, it’s part of the ‘game’ of collecting. If you know me, I collect a LOT. There are many items I don’t have because they were exclusive somewhere… and that’ okay! It makes going to those events more awesome.

But again, that’s just my thoughts.
